Primula (Primrose)

« Previous  1 2 Next »
Primroses include some of the most widely used herbaceous perennials, and most reach flowering size within one to two years after sowing. Some species grow in rocky places in higher mountainous areas, such as the Alps or the Himalaya range, whilst others are native of moist spots in woods or bogs. For cultivation requirements of certain species please refer to the list below.
Sow seeds flat on top of any rich, moist substrate in partial shade, preferably from autumn to early spring. Do not cover sowings and place pots in a protected spot outside where they will receive some moisture throughout the year, yet are protected from strong rains. Seeds from most species will require a prolonged cooling period of several weeks and if sowed late in spring, they may not germinate until spring the following year. Transplant seedlings in early summer or autumn, depending on growth.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
