Cassia & Chamaecrista (Winterhardy Senna)

Winter hardy Senna make ornamental, pinnate leaves on woody branches and bright colored flowers as their subtropical and tropical cousins. Unlike the latter there are a couple of species from North America which are resistant to freezing temperatures in winter. They can be grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny, protected spot in the open garden throughout the year in Central Europe as well. Plants which have become to large may be cut back easily in spring before new growth.
Prior to sowing scarify seed (e.g. carefully scratch the seed coat with fine sandpaper) and soak them in luke warm water for some 48h. Sow flat at some 20°C in any leafy and sandy, well drained soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. Keep seedlings preferably frostfree for the first two years. In winter place pots at some 5°C and reduce watering to a minimum. Then transplant to the garden at the end of spring.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7.
