Oregano or Majoran are very aromatic, mostly perennial herbs with a woody base. Many species are used as aromatic herbs in the Mediterranean and West Asian cookery. They are easily cultivated in any well drained, preferably rocky soil in a sunny spot. Excellent for the rock garden where they are protected from permament winter wetness.
Sow seeds on any well drained soil in full sun. Do not cover the fine seeds with soil and keep pots at some 15°C to 25°C in a protected spot outside. Even young plants already show a strong aroma.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7.

Origanum kopetdaghense (Kopet Dag Oregano) Exclusive

It grows as a binanuakl to short lived semiperennialand has oval, finely pubescent (=hairy) leaves and terminal cylindrical clusters with small rose white flowers. Ideal as a perennial pot plant for any rich. well drained soil in a sunny spot. Reduce watering in winter and keep plants at a minimum of some 5°C. In milder regions plant to the open garden in a sunny spot in any rocky soil with some protection from winter dampness. In a suitable position this species will readily self-sow, flowering in late summer the same year. In colder climates it should be grown as an annual with direct sowing in late spring. VI-IX.

Origanum syriacum (Syrian Oregano)
30 (50)cm, Syrian Majoran or locally called Za'atar is a rarely cultivated Majoran, and an essential ingredient for the traditional Lebanese cookery (e. g. Manaeesh, a very tasty pita bread). It is a perennial species with oval, densely pubescent, highly aromatic leaves and terminal globose or shortly cylindrical clusters with white flowers. Seeds from a population in Rechdibbine (Lebanon) at some 550m. For any rich, well drained soil in a protected spot in full sun. Origanum virens (syn. Origanum vulgare ssp. virens)
30 (80)cm, a perennial with upright stems and a woody base. It has oval to elliptical, strongly aromatic leaves. Native of rocky soils in sunny spots throughout the Canary islands, Madeira, and the Azores, where it is used in various local dishes. It differs from its Mediterranean cousin by its clear white flowers in small terminal buds and larger leaves. For any well drained soil in an always sunny spot.
