On El Hierro it is represented by the subspecies hierrense, whereas on Madeira the type supspecies heterophyllum is found. It has ornamental silvery-grey, oval leaves which have a very pleasant, light aromatic scent. Its' orange red funnel shaped flowers turn to bright blood red with age.
