It makes most ornamental, large, broadly heart-shaped, fresh green leaves and axillary born aerial bulbils which may gain up to 1 pound in weight. The bulbils as well as the tuber are rich in starch and are used cooked or fried just like potatoes in the kitchen. Dioscorea japonica (Japanese Yam) Exclusive

Dioscorea mexicana (Mexican Elephant's Foot)

2 (4)m, Mexican Elephant's Foot or Mexican Wild Yam is the Middle American counterpart to the South African Elephant's Foot (Dioscorea elephantipes) and makes annual to perennial vines with glossy leaves from a most ornamental tuber with deep fissures. Easily cultivated in any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot. In winter keep plants completely dry at some 12°C so that they go dormant and resprout in spring or (recommended) keep at a minimum of some 20°C with careful watering so that they remain evergreen. Plants require a climbing aid. The photo shows a dormant 12 cm ø tuber (some 15 years old). Concerning availability, we usually harvest seeds from Dioscorea mexicana around November.

Dracaena cinnabari (Socotra Dragon Tree)

3 (8)m, Socotra Dragon Tree is an absolute botanical rarity! It is not native to the Canary islands, but growing several thousand kilometers farer east on the island of Socotra (Yemen), where it is restricted to the zones of submontane thickets and montane grasslands. It is closely related to the Gran Canaria Dragon Tree (Dracaena tamaranae) - it's East African counterpart ! Dracaena cinnabari differs in having narrower and strongly leathery, dark green leaves, an erect stem and a very broad leaf crown, which altogether resembles a huge mushroom. This species is not available elsewhere. We have only 1 plant left, which was grown from a certified wild seed collection on Socotra 5 years ago. Since then there hasn't been any other collection for political instability in the region.

Dracaena draco "Tenerife form"

2 (10)m, Canary Dragon Tree, one out of two species of this genus growing on the Canary Islands, and one of the most beautiful in its genus. Naturally growing in rock crevices in the succulent zone at some 500m. Has become very rare in its habitat. This common form from Tenerife usually makes its' first branches, when its massive trunk has reached some (2 to) 4m in height.

Dracaena draco (La Palma)

2 (8)m, Canary Dragon Tree, in its La Palma incarnation, a rarely offered form, found only in one larger population which is made up of some 15 mature specimens in the north of the island. In contrast to the populations from Tenerife this starts to branch already just above ground level.

Dracaena ellenbeckiana (Kedong Dracaena)

200 (500)cm, though the Kedong Dracaena from E Africa (e.g. Kenya) does not belong to this group of real Dragon Trees, it has a similar habit with a woody, upright growing, branching stem densely covered with ornamental bluish green, smooth leaves and terminal spikes of greenish white flowers followed by numerous bright orange berries. Easily cultivated in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. Keep drier in winter at a minimum of some 12°C.

Dracaena serrulata (Yemen Dragon Tree) Exclusive

3 (12)m, the Dragonnier du Yémen is a very rare, slow-growing treelike species from steep cliffs and mountain plateaus in northern Yemen in the south of the Saudi Arabian peninsula. Makes distinct, narrow, rigid, dark green, very long leaves. For any rich, very well drained, rather stony soil in full sun. Keep drier in winter at a minimum of some 15°C. A real botanical treasure. Each plant (leaves) is some 30cm tall with 4 to 7 fully developed leaves. The seed collection was made under most dangerous circumstances due the political conditions in that region, thus the price cannot be set lower.

Dracontium gigas (Giant South American Titan Arum)

250 (450)cm, Giant South American Titan Arum makes probably the tallest and very broad leaf and the largest inflorescence of up to 60cm in height on a 100cm tall leaf stalk. A true giant plant within the genus Dracontium. It is native of open spots in tropical forests from Costa Rica to Nicaragua. Easily grown in any humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny (winter) to partially shaded (summer) spot at a minimum of some 20°C throughout the year. During dormancy reduce watering to a minimum. Tuberculets will usually need one year to root and to make their first leaf. VII-IX.

Dracunculus canariensis (Canary Dragon Aroid)

100 (150)cm, Canary Dragon Aroid makes a pure white, narrow spathe and a yellow spadix above several divided, fresh green leaves on a plain green stem. Native to the western Canary Islands, where it has become rather rare, it is already extinct on Madeira. From humus rich, partially shaded to sunny spots. A summer-dormant and winter green species. Not sufficiently winter hardy in Central Europe, best grown in a sunny spot in a cool, frost-free greenhouse with a winter minimum of some 5°C and careful watering. USDA Climate Zone 9/10. 5.0 cm ø tubers are flowering size. V-VI.

Dracunculus vulgaris (Mediterranean Dragon Aroid)

100 (170)cm, Mediterranean Dragon Aroid has several broadly divided leaves on speckled stems and a tall and broad, deep burgundy red to almost black spathe and spadix. Native to the Eastern Mediterranean in rocky, partially shaded places with plenty of moisture in winter and spring and dryish conditions in summer. Protect from persistant wetness in winter by planting the large corms rather deep, adding grit sand or crushed lava to enhance drainage. If raised from seeds preferably cultivate young tubers under frostfree conditions for two years before transplanting the dormant tubers to the open garden in summer. 6 cm ø tubers are flowering size.
