Cyrtanthus (Fire Lily)

Fire Lilies is a genus of some 60 species from southern Africa. They are bulbous evergreen to seasonally dormant plants with bright colored, white, yellow, orange, red to purplish-red flowers which usually appear with or shortly after new leaf growth. For any rich, very well drained substrate in a sunny spot throughout the year. During dormancy keep rather dry and in winter at a minimum of some 15°C.
Sow seed flat in any well drained substrate. Cover seeds very slightly with soil and keep pots at some 20°C in a sunny to partially shaded spot.

Cyrtanthus stenanthus

25cm, a seasonally dormant bulbous species from South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the Free State). Cyrtanthus stenanthus produces yellow, orange, red to greenish-red flowers above narrow leaves in winter. It is similar to closely related Cyrtanthus mackenii and differs by longer and more narrow flower tubes. For any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot throughout the year. Keep at a minimum of some 15°C in winter and reduce watering during dormancy. Seeds are mostly from an orange-red flowering form. Some seedlings may have yellow flowers tubes. XII-III.
