Nesocodon (Blue Mauritius Bellflower)

Blue Mauritius Bellflower is endemic to humus fill rock crevices on steep cliffs above a single waterfall on the island of Mauritius, where it is threatened with extinction due to introduced invasive species (Psidium spp.). Nesocodon mauritianus is a perennial, small woody shrub with leathery, dark green, lanceolate, serrated and glossy leaves and most ornamental, quite large pendulous bright plum blue bellflowers with orange-red, sweet nectar drops inside, which is typical for this species. This beautiful bellflower is easily cultivated in any humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny (winter) to partially shaded (summer) spot. In winter keep plants slightly drier at a minimum of some 15°C (optimum 20°C).
Sow the dust like seeds flat on any rich, very well drained soil. Do not cover seeds with soil and keep pots at some 20°C to 25°C in a partially shaded spot. Carefully water from beneath.
