Pericallis (Cinerary)

Macaronesian Cineraries are the ancestors of all modern cinerary hybrids much used in the garden trade, and these wild ancestors are equally charming and make excellent pot plants. They are either annual to perennial plants with mostly very showy inflorescences with numerous bright pink to rose-lilac, or sometimes white flowers above heart-shaped, leaves, covered with short silvery-green hairs. They are similar to South African Groundsels.
Sow flat on any humus rich soil in partial shade. Do not cover seeds with soil, and always water from beneath. Keep sunnier in winter at a minimum of some 12°C with reduced watering. Most species offered are semiperennials with semi-woody branches and usually die down after flowering. In several species new branches emerge from subterranean parts of the root stock.
